Though Hearts of Iron 4 is a grand strategy game where you can do whatever you want
there are some mechanics implemented that can guide players to certain natural and realistic conclusions for their country.

The Focus Tree is the mechanic used to create a sense of natural progression for the country
as it gets rid of certain negative modifiers, obtains great buffs, and a lot of factories to help you develop your economy.

Since Focus Trees give huge bonuses that you wouldn’t be able to get under normal circumstances just using the Construction menu or a Political Advisor, they are a very efficient way of quickly evolving your country.

In this guide, we will go through what the Focus Tree is, how it works, and showcase a list of all historical focus tree paths for countries with interesting branches in Hearts of Iron 4.

What Is a Focus Tree?

A Focus Tree is a simple way to develop your country, change your ideology, and progress down a certain path for the country without having to play around too much with the game’s mechanics.

This Focus Tree allows you to gain Military and Civilian Factories, Infrastructure, and Resources for free by giving 1 Political Power every day and waiting either 70 or 35 days for the focus to complete.

Most of the Focus Tree also has opposing paths, where you can gain something while losing something on another front. For example, you can expand your Military Factories while losing out on Civilian Factories, and vice-versa.

How Do Focus Trees Work in HOI4?

To use the Focus Tree, you just need to open the political menu and press the big brown button in the upper corner of the menu or press the notification that appears in the upper part of the screen.

In this menu, you need to select one of the focuses that are lit up, which means they are gray instead of brown, and you can start completing them. Most focus trees have paths that are quite easy to follow.

You can learn more about what they do by clicking them. However, almost every one of them has the following paths:

  • Industrial Branch – Build Military Factories, Civilian Factories, Forts, Infrastructure, and Research Slots
  • Army Branch – Gain bonuses to army technology, Army Experience, and sometimes free divisions
  • Navy Branch – Gain bonuses to naval technology, Navy Experience, and free Naval Dockyards
  • Air Branch – Gain bonuses to air technology, Air Experience, and free Air Bases
  • Political Branch – A choice between a Democratic, Fascist, Communist, or Non-Aligned (Monarchy) version of the country

Depending on the country, your priority will either be to develop as much as possible the Industrial branch or focus completely on the Political branch. 

Each country begins with different national spirits, which are either positive or negative modifiers to put the player in a more historical starting position.

For example, for France, your main goal will be to sprint down the Political Branch to remove the Disjointed Government national spirit.

But, if you are playing Germany, your goal will be to complete as many Industrial branch focuses to become as powerful as possible before going into the Political branch to gain all of the war goals to start WW2.

It all depends on the country you are playing, but generally the most important branches are your chosen Political one and the Industrial one.

The Army, Navy, and Air are all things that you usually get in the mid game while fighting in the war.

However, if you don’t want to mess around and just want to keep things simple, you can follow the historical path of the country.

But, for some reason, Paradox Interactive has decided to keep the historical path for a country hidden.
