One of the most interesting titles one can have in Medieval times is that of the Pope.

In Crusader Kings 3, the Pope works as a money bank for the players and will sometimes declare crusades for Jerusalem and random locations on the map.

However, the ability to declare crusades against any country in the world is extremely useful, and you should want that power.

So, the question is, can you even become the Pope in Crusader Kings 3?

Can You Personally Become the Pope in Crusader Kings 3

There is no way to become the Pope in CK3 without using a mod. The main mechanic of the game is that the player follows around a dynasty until its end.

Since the Pope is elected and usually shouldn’t have hereditary heirs, there is no way the normal game mechanics would work with the Papacy.

However, you can try to place family members on the throne of the Papacy, which can help you with high relations.

Unfortunately, there is no way to control what the Pope does, even if they are a part of your dynasty.

Your best bet would be to create a new Christian religion that has a temporal head of faith. This just means that the head of the faith will be you and your heirs.

You will have access to all the mechanics the Pope has, but you won’t be the Pope. You also won’t have any power over the other Catholic rulers.

How to Make a Family Member the Pope in Crusader Kings 3

To make one of your family members the Pope, you will first have to ask them to “take the vows” and become monks.

If they have really virtuous traits and good learning stats, this family member will have a high chance of climbing the clerical ladder and becoming a Pope.

However, there is nothing you can really do to influence this process.

How to Become the Pope Using Mods in Crusader Kings 3

If you’ve ever played Crusader Kings 2, then you would remember that the Papacy was very interactive and entertaining.

There is a mod that will allow you not only to become the Pope in CK3 but also to change clerical laws in your country and influence the papal election.

This CK3 mod is called The Catholic Trinity and it is available through the Steam Workshop.

Using this mod, you can choose the successors for various clergy holdings in your realm by changing the investiture laws.

The College of Cardinals is also present and corrupt as ever. You will easily place what relative you want on the throne of the Papacy by making them the favorite candidate in the upcoming elections.

That’s everything you need to know about how to become the Pope in Crusader Kings 3!
