Magic Gear Progression in Old School RuneScape

When it comes to combat, magic is often considered one of the weakest skills in the game. And if you don’t train properly, it could quickly become the most expensive as well.

Fortunately, with the right gear and armour, it can very quickly become a good fighting style in terms of damage per second.

Before We Begin

Before we begin this guide, there are a few things I’d like to emphasize.

First of all, this guide begins at level 40; this is where the magic gear progression starts branching out and can be considered the true beginning of OSRS.

Second of all, this guide is made for regular players. Hardcore iron men could still benefit from this guide, but some of the items won’t be applicable to you.

This guide also assumes that you’re already a member since all the items below are members only.

Early Game

Starting at level 40, you’re going to want the following items: a mystic elemental staff, broodoo shield, an amulet of glory, a combat bracelet, a blessing (of your choice), seers ring, wizard boots, and mystic robes.

Broodoo shields are a tradable item that can be bought for around 6,000 GP at the Grand Exchange. They can also be made by using a hammer on a tribal mask. In order to make Broodoo shields, players must have two snakeskins and eight nails in their inventory.

An amulet of glory can be bought for 12,000 GP at the Grand Exchange or can be made by enchanting a dragonstone amulet with a “Lvl-5 Enchant” spell. Same thing for the combat bracelet; it can be bought for 12,500 GP or be made by enchanting a dragonstone bracelet with the same spell.

The seers ring is a bit of an expensive but beneficial upgrade at this level. The seers ring is a tradable item that can be bought for 1,350,000 GP at the Grand Exchange. It gives a +6 attack and defense bonus for magic, and can be obtained by a drop from the Dagannoth Prime boss at the Waterbirth Island Dungeon.

Wizard boots give a +4 defense and attack bonus and can be obtained from medium treasure trail clue scrolls.

If doing treasure trail scrolls is not your thing, then you can buy wizard boots for 226,000 GP at the Grand Exchange since they’re a tradable item.

Mystic robes (hat, top, and bottom) can be dropped by a number of different monster, most of them being slayer monsters. They’re also a tradable item that can be bought for around 136,000 GP at the Grand Exchange.

At level 50 magic you should obtain a book of darkness for your off-hand. The book of darkness gives a +10 attack bonus for magic and can not be traded. Players may buy the book from Jossik for 5,000 GP after completing the “Horror from the Deep” quest.

Mid Game

Once you reach level 45 defense, it’s time to swap out the mystic hat for a farseer helmet. Players may obtain the helmet by completing “The Fremennik Trials” quest, or buy it for 41,000 GP at the Grand Exchange.

At this point in the game you should have good enough stats to complete the “Mage Arena I” miniquest and obtain one of the three god capes:

  • Saradomin cape
  • Zamorak cape
  • Guthix cape

The god capes are the second best mage capes in the game. Each of those capes give a +10 defense and attack bonus for magic.

You should also attempt to do the “Desert Treasure I” quest to obtain an ancient magic spell book and an ancient staff. After you get said items, you should attempt to obtain the following: barrows gloves, amulet of fury, and infinity boots.

Barrows gloves are not tradable, and players must complete the “Recipe for Disaster” quest first before they’re able to wear them. They can be purchased for 130,000 coins from the Culinaromancer’s Chest which is located in Lumbridge Castle’s cellar.

The amulet of fury is a tradable item that can be bought for 1,800,000 GP at the Grand Exchange, or it can be made by enchanting a onyx amulet using the “Lvl-6 Enchant” spell.

The infinity boots give a +5 defense and attack magic bonus. They’re a tradable item that can be bought for 393,000 GP at the Grand Exchange. Infinity boots can also be obtained by exchanging pizazz points at the mage training arena minigame.

At 60 magic you should try to obtain the master wand. The master wand gives a +20 defense and attack bonus for magic, and can be bought for 2,950,000 GP at the Grand Exchange.

Just like the infinity boots, the master wand can also be obtained by exchanging pizazz points at the mage training arena minigame.

Once you reach 70 magic and defense you should obtain the occult amulet, Ahrim’s robes, and imbue your seers ring. The occult amulet is a tradable item that can be bought for around 570,000 GP at the Grand Exchange. The occult amulet gives a +12 attack bonus for magic and can be obtained by killing smoke devils located in the Smoke Devil Dungeon.

Ahrim’s robes offer the best magic bonuses in the game and can be bought for approximate 7,481,300 GP at the Grand Exchange. It can also be obtained from the Barrows minigame.

At this point you should also look into imbuing your seers ring. Imbuing the ring will double its bonuses.

At 78 magic you should look into getting a trident of the swamp. It’s a tradable item that can be bought for 2,300,000 GP at the Grand Exchange. Players may also create this trident my using a magic fang on a uncharged trident of the seas.

At this point you should attempt the “Mage Arena II” miniquest to obtain an imbued god cape. Imbuing the cape adds an extra +5 attack and defense bonus for magic, making it the best mage cape in the game. All imbued god capes offer the same bonuses.

End Game

At 75 defense and hit points you should obtain the following items: a tormented bracelet, eternal boots, mage’s book, and a kodai wand.

The tormented bracelet offers a +10 attack bonus for magic, and can be made by enchanting a zenyte bracelet. It can also be bought for 11,600,000 GP at the Grand Exchange.

Eternal boots give a +8 attack and defense bonus for magic. They’re a tradable item that can either be acquired by using an eternal crystal on infinity boots, or buying them for 2,450,000 GP at the Grand Exchange.

Mage’s book can be bought for 2,200,000 GP at the Grand Exchange and offer +15 defense and attack bonuses for magic.

The kodai wand is the best wand in the game. It’s quite pricey, averaging at 84,500,000 GP at the Grand Exchange. The wand can also be acquired by completing the Chambers of Xeric raid with a master wand.

Finally, once you reach level 90 magic, if you’re interested in maximizing your damage per-second then you should start saving up for full ancestral robes and an arcane spirit shield.

Ancestral robes will cost you around 360,000,000 GP at the Grand Exchange, and can be obtained from a rare drop at the Cambers of Xeric raid.

An arcane spirit shield can be obtained by attaching a arcane sigil to a blessed spirit shield. The arcane spiritl shield is also tradable and can be bought for 130,000,000 GP at the Grand Exchange

That’s the best magic gear progression in Old School RuneScape!
