How to Get Married in Stardew Valley

In Stardew Valley, players can slowly build up their friendship with all of the residents of Pelican Town. The “level” of their relationship is represented in hearts, from 0 to 10.

As you gather hearts, you will start to get events with all of the characters, and you will get closer and closer to them. Out of all the residents, there are 12 that you can marry if you reach 10 hearts.

To get married in Stardew Valley, you will need to meet these certain requirements:

  • 10 hearts friendship with the marriage candidate
  • At least one upgrade at the farmhouse
  • The Mermaid’s Pendant

How to Get the Mermaid’s Pendant in Stardew Valley

To actually propose to your romantic interest, you will need to give them the Mermaid’s Pendant, which works like an engagement ring. Unfortunately, you can only get this item from the Old Mariner on the east side of the beach.

This NPC only appears during rainy days on the eastern beach that you can reach after fixing the bridge using 300 wood.

The Mermaid’s Pendant costs 5000g and will only be available if you meet the requirements above. Otherwise, the Old Mariner will tell you that you are not ready to purchase the pendant yet.

The Old Mariner will not appear during the Winter season unless you use the rain totem. He also only appears if you enter the beach between 6 AM and 7 PM.

Also, you can’t purchase the pendant if you are already married. You will first need to get a divorce before getting the item again.

Getting Married

Now that you have all that you need, head over to your boyfriend/girlfriend and give them the Mermaid’s Pendant. They will accept it if you have 10 hearts and they will tell you that they will prepare the wedding.

Sleep for three nights, and you will get the wedding cutscene. If you lose track of the time, you can also see the wedding date on the calendar. It is marked with a Mermaid’s Pendant icon.

The only reason why the wedding might be delayed is if there is an event on the day the wedding was supposed to happen. In that scenario, the wedding is postponed by one day.

Once you get married to an NPC, they will move to your farm and have their own room to the right of your bedroom. Each bachelor and bachelorette have a different, personalized room that appears in your house after marriage.

You will also unlock more friendship levels, allowing you to get to 14 hearts with your spouse. Your wife or husband will also do chores around the farm, such as watering the plants and feeding the animals.
