Gus is one of the non-romanceable characters in Stardew Valley, and giving him the right gifts will make the friendship progress much faster. Since you can only give two gifts per week, you should be careful what you give.

The best items to give Gus in Stardew Valley are Daffodils and Oranges. Daffodils will come easily just by looking around in the Spring, and you can later plant a couple of Orange Trees.

How Friendship Works and Why You Should Give Gifts

To befriend NPCs in Stardew Valley, you will have to give them gifts. Some will love some items, while others will hate them. Depending on their reaction, you will get different friendship points.

In Stardew Valley, 10 friendship hearts are the usual cap for each villager. The limit with Gus is 10 hearts, as you cannot romance him without some mods.

To get hearts with Gus, you will need to start getting friendship points with him. Each heart in Stardew Valley is worth 250 friendship points, which will start slowly disappearing as time passes.

The best way to befriend someone is to give them gifts they love. This will increase your relationship with them by 80 friendship points.

If you don’t have those items, you can also give them liked items, which will increase the relationship by 45 friendship points.

As long as you don’t give them disliked or hated items, you will only improve your relationship with NPCs by giving gifts. Since you only lose 2 points a day with them, the liked gifts will usually be enough.

Best Gift to Give Gus

Unfortunately, Gus has a really small pool of liked gifts, which means you won’t have many choices. Farmers generally have the best chance of befriending Gus fast since he loves cooked food and Oranges.

The best gift you can give Gus in the early game of Stardew Valley is Daffodils. They are incredibly easy to find and you just need to pick them up in the Spring.

Since you can get dozens of them at the start of the game, you won’t have to worry about any other gifts for Gus for a while.

You can later purchase Orange Saplings and plant them to get Orange Trees. They take 28 days to grow and only give you Oranges to harvest during the Summer.

However, this might mean that you won’t produce anything to gift during the Fall and Winter.

Still, since Gus isn’t romanceable, you likely won’t have any reason to hurry too much to befriend him. So, wait until you have your Orange Trees set up and get as many Oranges in the Summer as possible.

Deposit them and gift them to Gus 2 times every week.

Otherwise, the rest of the gifts are relatively bad. Cooked gifts aren’t really good since they require a lot of resources to craft. The Diamond is never a good choice since you would be much better off selling it.
