Furnaces are the most popular items in games that have any kind of mining mechanics, as players will spend a lot of time smelting down various ores they get while hitting nodes.

In Stardew Valley, you will experience the same thing, as you will need a lot of Furnaces to get all the ingots you need for the farm.

How to Get Furnace in Stardew Valley

To get the Furnace recipe to craft them in Stardew Valley, you will need to first get a Copper Ore. There are many ways you can get your first ever Copper Ore:

  • Mining
  • Fishing Chests
  • Purchase

Getting 1 Copper Ore

Just hitting rocks in the Mines is the common way most players will get their first Copper Ore. Once you reach floor 2 of the Mines, you will have a slight chance that even normal rocks will drop a Copper Ore.

There are a lot of special nodes that only give Copper Ore on the first floors of the Mines, so you will likely also get one just by hitting these.

There is also a chance you will get the Copper Ore before you even enter the Mines, as you can get it in one of the treasure chests that come from fishing.

When you fish you will usually have a small chance to also catch a treasure chest. These chests will often give you Ores to use for your farm.

The last easy method to force getting the Furnace faster is to just buy a Copper Ore from Clint’s shop, the Blacksmith, for 75 g. If you don’t know where to find the Blacksmith, here is a location guide.

Getting the Furnace Recipe and Your First Furnace

The next day after getting your first Copper Ore in Stardew Valley, you will get an event while exiting the farmhouse between 6 and 11:30 AM, where Clint will come and give you the Furnace recipe to craft some for yourself.

To craft the Furnace and finally get it in Stardew Valley, you will just need to follow these steps:

  1. Open the Menu (press E on a keyboard, B on Xbox and Switch, O on PS).
  2. Go to the Crafting tab (the one that has a hammer icon).
  3. Press the Furnace icon and drag it into your inventory.

The Furnace will appear transparent if you don’t have the required items to craft it. To craft a Furnace, you will need Stone x25 and Copper Ore x20.

This means that you will likely need to spend a lot of time looking for Copper Ore before even thinking of making this useful machine.

You can now craft as many Furnaces as you want without anyone stopping you.

Other Ways to Get a Furnace

Players can also get a Furnace relatively late in Stardew Valley by completing the Blacksmith’s Bundle at the Community Center.

Unfortunately, this is not a viable way to get your first Furnace since you need ingots to complete this Bundle.

Still, it is an extra Furnace to use later in the game, so keep an eye out for it. You will just need a Copper Ingot, an Iron Ingot, and a Gold Ingot.

Otherwise, there are no other ways to get the Furnace, so make sure to craft as many as you want.

How to Use Furnace in Stardew Valley

After crafting a Furnace, you will need to place it. You can place it anywhere you want on the farm and off it.

The only problem when placing a Furnace outside the farm is that there is a chance that villagers will walk into it and destroy it, so avoid placing them on obvious paths.

Once the Furnace is down, you will need Coal and Ores. Here is how to use the Furnace in Stardew Valley:

  1. Equip the Ore you want to smelt (select it in the hot bar and hold it over your head).
  2. Interact with the Furnace while having Coal in your inventory.
  3. Wait for a maximum of 8 hours (depending on the quality of the Ore) and interact with the Furnace again to pick up the Ingot.

Tips for Using the Furnace

The main problem players might face while using the Furnace is that they don’t have Coal in their inventory.

If you don’t, the game won’t give you any hints that something is wrong, and you will just keep clicking to place the Ores in the Furnace while nothing happens.

You will need at least 1 Coal per Ore you want to smelt in the Furnace. You will get a little animation where the Furnace starts burning, and you will look at it as it starts turning the Ore into an Ingot.

Players can only smelt one Ore in a Furnace, which means you will need multiple machines to get more Ingots at the same time.

Here is the exact time it will take in-game for each Ore type to smelt into Ingots in the Furnace in Stardew Valley:

  • Copper Ore – 30 minutes
  • Iron Ore – 2 hours
  • Gold Ore – 5 hours
  • Iridium Ore – 8 hours

That’s everything you need to know about how to get and use a Furnace in Stardew Valley!
