FFXIV – How to Become a Mentor (Trade, Battle, Mentor)

You are currently viewing FFXIV – How to Become a Mentor (Trade, Battle, Mentor)

The term “mentor” is thrown around in many MMORPG games with little thought. But in Final Fantasy XIV, it is a real role that carries weight.

As a Mentor in FFXIV, you get to answer questions, train other players, and help newbies find their place in Eorzea. You also get a pretty cool mount, so that’s a huge bonus.

How to Become a Mentor in FFXIV

To become a full Mentor, you must complete two specialized mentor programs.

The programs are just a list of requirements you need to apply to become a Mentor.

The most common type of mentor is a Battle Mentor. From this type of Mentor, you can become a PvP Mentor as well.

Complete 1000 Dungeons, Raids, or Trials

This is fairly straightforward and will be done passively. You can check your progress at any time by going to Achievements, then Battle, then Dungeons.

This will have the Dungeon Master achievement or Dungeon Siege achievement tracking.

Receive 1500 Commendations

To track commendations, head to Achievements again. This time go to Character and find the Leave a Good (or Better) Impression achievement.

A pro tip for getting commendations is to play Tank or Healer, be helpful, and always show respect.

Complete Level 90 Tank Role Quest – “A Path Unveiled”

The level 90 Tank role quests begin in Radz-at-Han, with the first quest being “Shrouded in Peril”.

To unlock the quest, you must complete the Endwalker MSQ “At World’s End”.

Complete Level 90 Healer Role Quest – “The Gift of Mercy”

The prerequisite MSQ is the same for all level 90 role quests.

The first Healer role quest you need is also at Radz-at-Han, and it’s called “Far From Tree.”

Complete Level 90 DPS Role Quest – Choice of Three

For the DPS role, it’s a little different because you have three choices.

You only need to complete one of the following:

  • Melee DPS – “To Calmer Seas” (begins with “Storm Clouds Brewing”)
  • Physical Ranged DPS – “Laid to Rest” (begins with “Seed of Disquiet”)
  • Magical Ranged DPS – “Ever March Heavensward” (begins with “Our Arching Souls”)

Trade Mentor

Trade Mentors are mentors that show Sprouts how to craft and gather, as well as how to make Gil doing so.

This type of mentor is less common, which makes it a good choice for those who want to fill the shoes that are needed.

  • Gather 300 Collectables – start this by doing the quest “Inscrutable Tastes” at the Foundation.
  • Synthesize 100 Collectables – synthesize by going to Collectable recipes in the Crafting Log.
  • Reach Level 90 Disciple of the Land – any gatherer
  • Reach Level 90 Disciple of the Hand – any crafter

Applying to Become a Mentor

After you complete all of the Trade or Battle Mentor requirements, head to any major city (and some other locations) and find a Smith NPC.

They will have a green Sprout symbol above their head with an arrow behind it. If you have trouble finding one, head to the inn in the major cities.

  • South Shroud (19-18)

Perks and Responsibilities of Being a Mentor in FFIXV

Just getting the title Mentor isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. To make the most of being a Mentor, even a specialized one, you must take advantage of what it means to be a Mentor.

It also means you have to take on your role with pride. After all, Square Enix made the role of Mentor to help others, not to give veterans a reason to boast and be prideful.

Give Advice

When you have the Mentor symbol above your head, you will be asked questions by Sprouts. Expect private messages and questions in-game.

You will be expected to be the leader in every duty you go into. This can be very fulfilling, or it can be a drag, depending on how you look at it.

Be a Role Model

To really be a Mentor, one must also be a mentor. This means to look at it as more than a title and instead as a position.

One of the in-game rules for being a mentor is that you must “be an exemplar for player etiquette. This means you must be respectful, helpful, and follow any code of conduct that FFXIV has.

Manage the Novice Network

The Novice Network is an official chat channel for Sprouts to ask you questions. It is up to you to answer these questions and recruit new Sprouts who don’t know the Novice Network exists.

The network can only hold 100 Mentors and 412 Sprouts, so if you don’t get added automatically, it’s probably full.

Use Duty Roulette: Mentor

Duty Roulette: Mentor is a daily duty that eventually leads to the Astrope mount after 2,000 completed runs.

This is a duty designed specifically for Mentors to join and be matched with the parties that are struggling to find that last member.

Now you know how to become a member, but do you have what it takes?

Feel free to let me know in the comments if I missed anything about becoming a Mentor, and let me know if you have an Astrope!
