Stardew Valley – How to Build and Upgrade a Coop

You are currently viewing Stardew Valley – How to Build and Upgrade a Coop

In Stardew Valley, there are two types of buildings that can hold animals: Coops and Barns. If you like taking care of animals in this game, then you will likely want to get both.

The Coop is for smaller animals, such as Chickens and Rabbits, while the Barn is the home of all of the big farm animals, such as Cows and Pigs.

At the start of the game, the Coop is a much better choice since Chickens are relatively cheap, and they can make you a lot of money with their constant production of Eggs.

To build and upgrade a Coop in Stardew Valley, you will need to talk to Robin at the Carpenter’s Shop and select to Construct Farm Buildings.

How to Build a Coop in Stardew Valley

To build most of the buildings on the farm, including the Coop, in Stardew Valley, you will have to talk to Robin while she stands at the counter in the Carpenter’s Shop.

The Carpenter’s Shop is situated in the Mountains area of the game, north of Pelican Town.

You can also access this location by leaving your farm to the north and then walking northwest to enter the Mountains.

You can see the Carpenter’s Shop in the southern part of the Mountains region. It is one of the only two buildings in the area. The shop is open from 9 AM to 4 PM every day besides Tuesday.

Approach Robin at the counter inside the Carpenter’s Shop and select the Construct Farm Buildings option to see all the buildings you can get from her. The Coop should be the first building you see in this menu.

You will see that you need 4,000 g, x300 Wood, and x100 Stone to build it. If you have all the necessary items, you can press the Build button below, which has a hammer icon.

You will then see your farm, and you can choose the exact location where you want to place the Coop.

Players will need a free 6×3 space to place the Coop. Stuff such as rocks, logs, and even other animals in the way can stop you from putting down a Coop wherever you want.

Once you select a place to build the Coop, you will have to wait 3 days for Robin to finish building it.

During this time, you cannot interact with Robin, so make sure to get anything you need during those 3 days from her before sending her to build the Coop.

How to Upgrade a Coop in Stardew Valley

After you finish building a Coop in Stardew Valley, you can now upgrade it. Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple button to just upgrade a building in the game.

What you need to do to upgrade the Coop in Stardew Valley is to open the Construct Farm Building menu from Robin’s Shop again and press the left arrow to see the last buildings.

You should now see the Big Coop as a possible constructible building.

The way this works is that you have to purchase the Big Coop “building”.

You will then see the farm, as you would when you built the Coop, but you will actually have to find and select a normal Coop to upgrade.

If you don’t have a Coop on your farm, you won’t see the Big Coop building option in the menu.

If you have a Big Coop on the farm, you will see the Deluxe Coop option instead.

Here are the resources you need to upgrade either the Coop into a Big Coop or the Big Coop into a Deluxe version:

  • Big Coop – 10,000 g, x400 Wood, x150 Stone
  • Deluxe Coop – 20,000 g, x500 Wood, x200 Stone

The upgraded versions of the Coop will allow you to get new animals besides Chickens and will also give you the chance to incubate Eggs and get new animals without having to purchase them from Marnie’s Ranch.

That’s everything you need to know about how to build and upgrade a Coop in Stardew Valley!
