Stardew Valley is a farming and life simulation game where you get to start your life anew in the ramshackle of a farm that your grandfather left you as inheritance.

Since Stardew Valley is about more than just planting crops, mining, and fishing, many players would like to know how to propose to their favorite bachelor/bachelorette.

Unfortunately, proposing to NPCs in this game is not an easy process since you need to get a rare item and also make sure that you have the best possible relationship with the person you are interested in.

To propose to an NPC in Stardew Valley, you first need to reach 10 hearts with them, upgrade the farmhouse to the second level, and then give your partner the Mermaid’s Pendant.

How to Propose to an NPC in Stardew Valley

The first step to actually proposing to an NPC in Stardew Valley is getting 10 friendship hearts with them. You can do this by giving them two gifts every week (preferably something they love) and talking to them every day.

Once you reach 7 hearts, you will need to give them a Bouquet from Pierre’s General Store to start dating them.

Unfortunately, most romanceable NPCs will have a maximum of 7 hearts until you date them. Giving them a Bouquet will unlock the final 3 hearts, allowing you to get to 10 hearts.

After that, you will need to put in the work to get to 10 friendship hearts, which will get you a letter in the mail from Mayor Lewis saying that you will need the Mermaid’s Pendant to ask your significant other to become your wife/husband.

However, your partner will not accept your proposal until you upgrade the farmhouse to the second level, which allows the NPC to get a special room to the side of the house, so make sure to do that first.

Then, to propose in Stardew Valley, give your NPC partner the Mermaid’s Pendant, they will accept (if all requirements are met), and your wedding will take place 3 days later, organized by your fiance.

How to Get the Mermaid’s Pendant and Get Married

Getting the Mermaid’s Pendant to propose to an NPC in Stardew Valley is actually the hardest part of the process since you can only purchase this item from a rare shopkeeper that only spawns on rainy days.

The Old Mariner is a special NPC that will start appearing on the Beach, next to the tidal pools to the east, on rainy days after you receive the letter from Mayor Lewis about proposing to a villager.

You can reach his location in the eastern part of the Beach if you fix the bridge using Wood x300.

The Mermaid’s Pendant costs 5,000 g, and the Old Mariner will only sell it to players if they have a villager with a 10 hearts relationship, an upgraded farmhouse, and aren’t married already to someone else.

Marriage and Married Life

After you propose to an NPC in Stardew Valley, you will have to wait 3 days for the wedding to happen. So, if you propose to someone on the 1st day of the month, the wedding cutscene will start on the 4th day of the month.

Once you two are married, you will now unlock four new extra hearts that you can get with your spouse, which will trigger a new cutscene at the final level of friendship.

One problem you will also have now is that you will lose 20 friendship points with the spouse every day if you don’t talk to them.

Since you both wake up in the same house, it should be relatively easy to talk to them every day.

The NPC will also take care of the farm if they are happy. They will repair fences, water crops, make you breakfast, and feed animals.

That’s everything you need to know about how to propose to an NPC in Stardew Valley!
