Chocobos are one of the most iconic creatures of the Final Fantasy franchise, and FFXIV doesn’t disappoint. In fact, there are many types of Chocobo in FFXIV.

You are able to get the basic Chocobo early on in FFXIV. All it takes is a little bit of the main story and a simple side quest.

To get a Chocobo in FFXIV, complete the “My Little Chocobo” quest. Then, use the Chocobo Whistle. From there, you can summon your Chocobo with the mount menu at any time.

How to Get a Chocobo in Final Fantasy XIV

After you get a Chocobo in FFXIV, you are able to call on it as long as you’re not in a city, on duty, or in combat.

It’s easy to add the Chocobo to your hotbar, allowing you to one-click ride. After a while, you can even unlock flying, making traveling super efficient.

Renting a Chocobo

Before you get your own Chocobo, it’s possible to rent one. For 800 gil, you can talk to a Chocobkeep.

There is a Chocobokeep at each city-state stable. They allow you to rent a Chocobo for 10 minutes. However, they only go to pre-set destinations.

Join a Grand Company

Once you reach “A Hero in the Making” in your MSQ, know that you’ve almost unlocked the Chocobo.

The quest leads you to choose a Grand Company. After you do, the company grants you a Chocobo via a side quest.

Do My Little Chocobo Quest

Once you complete “A Hero in the Making,” you are able to do the “My Little Chocobo” quest, which unlocks the basic Chocobo.

During the quest, you must buy a Chocobo License for 200 Company Seals. You get these by doing hunts early on.

Don’t forget to use the Chocobo Whislte in your inventory after you complete the quest. Otherwise, you do not “activate” the Chocobo.


Other Types of Chocobo

The Company Chocobo is the basic chocobo from other Final Fantasy games. But there are other variants available in FFXIV.

Note: you can also change the color of your Chocobo by putting it in the stable and feeding it certain food. But this is only for the Company Chocobo. The below do not change colors.

Ceremony Chocobo

  • Acquisition – Get Married with at least the Gold Plan (available on the MogStation).
  • Appearance – Two-seater that is white and covered in white silks
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 20%

Black Chocobo

  • Acquisition – Divine Intervention MSQ in Heavensward
  • Appearance – Like the Company Chocobo, only black
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 86%

Chocobo Carriage

  • Acquisition – MogStation
  • Appearance – A regular Chocobo with a flying carriage (four-seater)
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 10%

Parade Chocobo

  • Acquisition – Leaving A Better Impression II (collect 3000 player commendations)
  • Appearance – Dressed up Fat Chocobo
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 12%

Draught Chocobo

  • Acquisition – Recruit a Friend Campaign reward (after your friend is subscribed for 90 days)
  • Appearance – Two-seater that looks like a fancy standard Chocobo
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 26%

Fat Chocobo

  • Acquisition – A Realm Reborn Collector’s Edition
  • Appearance – Regular Fat Chocobo in signature yellow color
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 34%

Original Fat Chocobo

  • Acquisition – During certain sweepstakes and giveaways
  • Appearance – Fat Chocobo but white
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 6%

Fat Black Chocobo

  • Acquisition – During certain giveaways on Twitch and Twitter
  • Appearance – Like Fat Chocobo but black
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 10%

Amber Draught Chocobo

  • Acquisition – Calamity Salvager for 8 Gold Chocobo Feathers
  • Appearance – Two-seater, red Chocobo
  • Percent of Players That Own It – 8%

Legacy Chocobo

  • Acquisition – Legacy Campaign
  • Appearance – Regular chocobo with black armor
  • Percent of Players That Own It – less than 2%
