How to Open Garage Doors in Project Zomboid

The garages in Project Zomboid, which can be found around nearby houses or in residential areas, are worth exploring, as they contain several resources and materials, especially generators.

Read on to learn the 4 ways to open the garage door!

1. Press “E” Or Right-click On the Door

Generally, you should treat the garage door like a normal door, meaning that you can simply open it by pressing “E” when you face the door.

Otherwise, you can right-click on the garage door and select “Open Door”.

If the door is simply opened, there won’t be much to talk about, but if it shakes and remains motionless, you’ll have to find another approach.

In that case, you should kill all the zombies around and loot them to find the key. Besides, the key can be obtained in nearby houses or trash bins.

2. Climb Through The Window

When it’s impossible to enter the garage through the main door, you can go around it and see if there are any windows.

Next, press “E” when you stand next to the window or right-click on it and select “Open Window“. Otherwise, consider smashing it if you tried these methods but didn’t see the result.

To smash the window, right-click on it and select “Smash Window”. Keep in mind that you should equip any weapon to avoid bleeding.

Once inside, you can get to the garage door and open it from the inside as usual.

3. Use Melee Weapons

Most melee weapons, regardless of their type, deal damage against the door.

To smash the garage door using a melee weapon, right-click on it in your inventory, select “Equip Primary/In Both Hands”, then attack the door like you’re attacking the zombies.

Although you can use most melee weapons to demolish the garage door, they have different damage. You’ll take less time destroying the door when you use the melee weapon with greater damage.

For example, it takes at least 20-30 swings to destroy the garage door using the baseball bat, while you only need to hit 6 times with an axe or 4 times with the sledgehammer. Therefore, it’s advisable to choose the proper weapons.

Remember that once the door is broken, it can’t be restored, and the garage is no longer safe to stay in.

4. Use Throwables

You can use throwables to destroy structures, and garage doors are no exception.

There are a lot of throwables in Project Zomboid, and the fire bombs and the Molotov cocktails are the best among them, thanks to their easy crafting recipes.

It’s pretty simple to craft the fire bomb, as you only need a bottle, 4 units of gas, and ripped sheets. However, this recipe is exclusive to the Engineer occupation.

If you didn’t pick Engineer as your main profession earlier, check out this post to learn how to make Molotov cocktails.

To destroy the garage door using throwables, aim and throw them at it, then stay as far as possible to avoid spreading fire.

The door will be burned to dust subsequently, so you can’t use the garage as your secure base after that.

Moreover, remember that destroying the garage doors with weapons or throwables causes a lot of noise, attracting nearby zombies to the sound’s source. So, it’s advisable to clear out the zombies in the area first or use the first and second methods.

That’s how to open garage doors in Project Zomboid.
