How to Increase Carry Weight in Project Zomboid

Having a high carrying weight in Project Zomboid offers several benefits that can enhance your survival chances in the game. Generally, it grants you the ability to transport larger items and equipment.

In Project Zomboid, there are 4 ways to increase your carry weight. Without further ado, let’s dive deep into the details!

1. Choose the Organized Trait

The Organized trait is one of the best traits you should choose in the early game.

It provides 130% capacity for all containers in-game, including your initial carry weight. Thus, this trait is the first on your bucket list regarding increasing carry weight.

2. Increase Your Strength Skill

Just like Organized traits, Strength is a vital skill you must level up, as it not only increases your carrying capacity but also offers other valuable benefits.

At the maximum level of 10 in Strength, you can add up to 20 capacity.

On the other hand, keep in mind that this carrying capacity is still affected by injuries or hungry moodle.

To quickly increase your strength skill, you should exercise regularly, carry over 50% of your weight capacity, swing zombies with melee weapons, or run.

3. Wear A High Capacity Bag/Backpack

In Project Zomboid, you can simultaneously equip wearables (bags, backpacks) and handhelds (gun case, first aid kit).

Bags, backpacks, or handhelds allow you to carry more resources without reducing your speed thanks to their maximum capacity (the maximum weight they can carry) and the encumbrance reduction (the percentage of reduced weight after you place items inside).

There are lots of bags, backpacks, and handhelds in Project Zomboid, and it’s up to your preference and their rarity to choose.

Our recommendations for high-capacity choices are military backpacks, big hiking bags, garbage bags, and suitcases.

Check out this post to learn where to obtain military backpacks and big hiking bags. Garbage bags and suitcases can be found in kitchens, grocery stores, desks, and pawn shops.

4. Use The Vehicles

Finally, the last option to increase carry weight is to make use of vehicles.

In Project Zomboid, vehicles (primarily cars) offer significant capacity, allowing you to store items effectively. Vehicles are also the exclusive tools to transport items anywhere you want.

Each vehicle has different total storage, and you can place your items in not only the trunk but also the seats and glove compartment. However, remember that you can’t choose the seat with items to sit on when using the Switch Seat function.

In general, vans and trucks have a larger capacity than regular cars.

Our picks for the best capacity vehicles are the Chevalier Step Van, Dash Bulldriver, Franklin Valuline, and Franklin All-Terrain.

Most cars can be found randomly on roads, in garages, parking lots, and gas stations.

Ultimately, if you apply all of these methods, the highest capacity to carry items you can achieve is:
[12 (your default capacity) + 20 (strength level 10) + 28 (military backpack’s capacity) + 20 * 2 (you can carry up to two handhelds, in this case, 2 garbage bags) + 213 (Chevalier Step Van’s total capacity)] * 130% (Organized trait) = 353.

The numbers above can vary based on your vehicle’s total capacity and, mostly, your strength level.

That’s how to increase carry weight in Project Zomboid!
